Membership Information for the
Mid-Atlantic Popular/American Culture Association
What are the benefits of being a MAP/ACA member?
If you live in or near the Mid-Atlantic states, you can count on an annual meeting site in an interesting locale that's often within driving distance. It's great to belong to the national organizations, too, but then their meetings are sometimes held at the other end of the country. Travel is expensive, and we know that your employers don't always pay your way. That makes attending MAP/ACA conferences a good deal all around. And don't forget: If you are not reimbursed by your employer for your MAP/ACA annual membership fee, it probably is tax-deductible. Ask your tax advisor.
As you'll read below, for one smaller-than-usual package price, you:
become a MAP/ACA member (and we're a terrific group, if we do say so ourselves),
get your annual conference registration, receive a ticket to the annual conference banquet (and the food's great!), become subscribed to the MAP/ACA's two publications, the Mid-Atlantic Almanack (the association's refereed journal) and the Mid-Atlantic Gazette, (the association's newsletter). will also be notified of other major opportunities and events in other regional, national and international pop culture organizations.
Unlike other memberships, one annual fee covers everything. All of this for only $120! Surprised? If you have much experience with other scholarly organizations, you know that typically you'll be paying a membership fee, perhaps a journal fee and then shell out another hundred or so for the convention registration fee. And then sometimes the banquet ticket is extra. This is what makes Mid-Atlantic Popular/American Culture Association membership such a good deal: just one fee for everything. Many national associations' annual dues alone are more than this. And for students, retiree and independent scholars, membership and conference registration is only $80. When applying, students must also send along a photocopy of their current full-time college/university I.D.
If you would like to join MAP/ACA but not attend the conference, the cost for a yearly membership alone is $50. This price includes a year's subscription to MAP/ACA journal, The Almanack. Both membership and conference registration are handled through our online journal, The Gazzette, located at www.mapacagazette.net which also contains updated conference information. If the registration page is not open when you visit, feel free to contact the Treasurer with and questions.
